Metonymic and Holonymic Roles and Emergent Properties in the SNOMED CT Ontology
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper discusses the manner in which SNOMED CT (SCT) has confused the metonymic role of some class labels as holonyms and has inappropriately assigned property inheritance down a holonymic chain due to its transitiveness. The notion of emergent properties is introduced as the only form of property that can exist on a holonym and its use in a hypernymic inheritance hierarchy is discussed. The consequences of this modelling approach for SCT are discussed and the use of metonymic substitution for holonyms at the point of care is presented as a source of confusion for causing the modelling of inheritance in holonymic hierarchies for clinical care. The mathematical modelling of the metonymic substitution is discussed but left as future work. 1

Background and Aim: Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine systems are the important supportive for electronic health record in registration and retrieval of data. Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) is the most comprehensive language and then the consistency of exchanged data across health care providers and finally the high effectiveness of health care. متن کاملMetonymies in Medical Terminologies. A SNOMED CT Case Study
Metonymies are language phenomena, in which one expression is used to refer to a related one. Whereas there are many examples in medical discourse, it has been controversially discussed to what extent metonymic phenomena also matter in medical terminologies like SNOMED CT, where they could hamper their proper use. We investigated this by analyzing all SNOMED CT single word fully specified names...
متن کاملInvestigating the lexico-syntactic properties of phenotype terms – Application to interoperability between HPO and SNOMED CT
Objective: To investigate the lexico-syntactic properties of clinical phenotype terms in order to identify partial lexical mappings between HPO and SNOMED CT. Methods: We identify modifiers HPO terms and attempt to map demodified terms to SNOMED CT through UMLS. Results: We identified partial mappings to SNOMED CT for 20% of HPO concepts with no complete mapping to SNOMED CT. Conclusions: Throu...
متن کاملLearning Formal Definitions for Snomed CT from Text
Snomed CT is a widely used medical ontology which is formally expressed in a fragment of the Description Logic EL++. The underlying logics allow for expressive querying, yet make it costly to maintain and extend the ontology. Existing approaches for ontology generation mostly focus on learning superclass or subclass relations and therefore fail to be used to generate Snomed CT definitions. In t...
